The Devil Made Me Do it

Morning guys, I'd  like to thank all of you who played in the Devil Ball Tournament. It was one of the better turn outs in the past couple of years. A, at a boy, to Tim Anderson for the Pig Roast and for Adrain for his cooking of the Pig. I'd like to thank all club members who are supporting the new 50/50 Pot program. We now have 250 + in the pot and yesterdays winner was Gary Tangen. With the Holiday Classic coming this weekend, we can greatly improve that total, just waiting for some one to get a hole in one. Don't forget to sign up the Classic this week. Let's make this one of the more memorable Classic in awhile.

Adjustment!!!!!!!!!!

In the past few weeks and months, it’s come to my attention that the state of this Men’s Club has steadily slipped down the hill of dysfunction. I believe this to be true for several reasons, none of which is more important than the other. We’ve become somewhat disconnected with reality. Change happens in life and in business and with that comes adjustments. We’ve become selfish, with the “ what’s in it for me” attitude, or I’m not going play. (I.e. tournament handicap, Wednesday nite Men's club being canceled or moved). Guys, it’s about making adjustments, having better communication for all who are involved in making decisions and those who are affected by those decisions. Those of you, who feel Harbour Pointe Golf serves at the pleasure of the Men's Club, need a reality check. It’s really the other way around.

Though I don’t always agree with Corp. or Pro Shop management decisions, for whatever reasons they were made, I’ve learned to adjust, as to make my experience at Harbour Pointe more enjoyable. We’re not always going to have the best weather conditions, golf course conditions or set up, or tournament decisions, (I E handicaps and etc). But if we can somehow make adjustments in our own attitude, then we can make this golfing experience more fun for ourselves and everyone else.

I ask the members of this club to stop bickering and making knee jerk decisions, when things don’t turn out the way you think they should.

Thank you for listening. This was written by this blogger, to express his point of view and is not in defense of the Pro Shop management or the Men's Club.

Handicap Alert

Hi Guys, this alert is being brought to by Walker Martain, the Handicap Chairman and the Handicap committee. It's very important that you read this and understand it. It could very well effect alot of you guys.
To all Harbour Point men’s club members:

The following information is given to all members to insure that you are taking care to update all handicap systems you may be on and the resulting effect of not doing so which will result when playing in any Harbour Point Men’s club event. In addition to HPMC, many of you are members at country clubs, WSGA, Jorgenson’s golf, as well as out of state clubs, which maintain their own and separate handicap system from our club USGA system. For that reason it is incumbent on you to make sure that with each system all scores posted match.
Therefore, if a player maintains a Handicap Index at more than one club, and the clubs do not use a networked computation service, all acceptable scores must be posted at all clubs. (See Decision 6-5/1 .) This will result in the same Handicap Index at all clubs. Failure to post all acceptable scores at all clubs produces a Handicap Index that is not based on the player's best 10 differentials of the last 20 scores and consequently may not be termed a Handicap Index . If a player has a different Handicap Index at different clubs the committee in charge of the competition may require the player to use the lowest Handicap Index when competing with players from more than one club. (See Decisions 6-5/2 < and 6-5/3
Implementation of USGA rules will be applied:
• USGA rule 6b. Stroke Play
In any round of a handicap competition, the competitor must ensure that his handicap is recorded on his score card before it is returned to the Committee. If no handicap is recorded on his score card before it is returned (Rule 6-6b), or if the recorded handicap is higher than that to which he is entitled and this affects the number of strokes received, he is disqualified from the handicap competition; otherwise, the score stands.

Note: It is the player’s responsibility to know the holes at which handicap strokes are to be given or received.

Results from the Past Month

As they say the results are here and they are a mixed bag to say the least. There's quite a bit of info, so I'll post it over the next  couple of days, so you don't get it in one long e-mail. I'll start with the current Money list and the REd White Blue 4th of July tournament. You know if your name is Edwards or Landzinger you can't miss being somebody's partner, well done. Also there's still time to get in this Sunday's Summer Field Tournament, the course is in great shape, and the weather will be fantastic!!!!!!!!!!  More to come tomorrow.

Congratulations To Winners

Morning guys, I'd like to congratulate Eric Morris and Steve Erickson for winning the Member- Member this past weekend, great job you two. Also I would like to thank the Pro shop staff for all their hard and hectic work put in to put this tournament together. On a sour note, I was very disappointed in the membership, in the poor showing for one of the best tournament format of the year. Only 37 teams played this weekend, out of over two hundred members. It's going to very hard to continue putting these types of tournaments on if participation doesn't start getting better in the future. The success of our men's club and its growth depends on member participation and involvement. The board members and the Pro shop would be very interested any in comments or suggestions to help make this and future tournaments better, please lets us know. Results of this tournament and pictures will be following in the days to come. On a last note, not enough can be said for the maintenance crew for the great condition the course was in this weekend, what a wonderful job guys, thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!

Last Week Before Member-Member

Ok all you weekend warriors, this is the last week before the Member-Member and we still need around 10 more teams to sign up. You really don't want to miss, probably the best tournament of the year. The weather is projected to be really nice all weekend, and with the up coming week of dry weather, the course will be in the best shape of the year. There will be many ways to earn money on the books and more. There's Daily pots to win , the putting contest, the over all tournament winnings, there'll be sharing the love off the special event, plus any side wagers. There's also the tournament tee prizes. Some of the best food of the year will be served by Adrian and his staff, so you're really getting a lot back from your entry fee. If you haven't signed up yet, get off the fence, get a partner and get signed up before its to late. I'll see you out there!!!!!!!!!

Correction to Member-Member Date

Hey guys, My bad, I enter the wrong dates for the member-member and I'm sorry for the confusion. The correct dates are the 10th, 11th, and the 12th of June and we stand by those dates. Friday the 10th we'll have the special event in the club room and the start of the putting contest starting at 6 PM. The putting contest will go through Sat. Nite. Hope this clears up the confusion. Big D

Handicap Change for Wed Nite Play

Hi Guys.

Based on our last meeting and the data provided by Walker, here is the message I sent to all concerned members.
I hope it represents our position well. Your feedback is welcomed and appreciated.

We had our HPMC Board Meeting on Monday, 5/9. Walker Martin, who chairs the Handicap Committtee, provided the data I requested in order to take the guesswork out of the Tournament Handicap debate. A breakdown follows. If you would like additional data, I can probably glean it from the report he furnished. Walker is also cc'd here if you would like to discuss with him. The USGA Handicaps are from 5/1/11 and the Tournament Handicaps are through 4/26/11.

Here are the raw stats:
There are 197 players currently tracking.
127/197 (64.5%) have a T-handicap that is the same or higher than their USGA (EZLinks).
70/197 (35.5%) have a T-handicap below their USGA:
33/197 (16.8%) have a T-handicap that is lower by 1.0 or less:
17/197 (8.6%) are 0-0.50 lower
16/197 (8.1%) are .60-1.0 lower
37/197 (18.8%) have a T-handicap more than 1.0 below their USGA:
21/197 (10.7%) are 1.1-2.0 lower
12/197 (6.1%) are 2.1-3.0 lower
4/197 (2.0%) are more than 3.0 lower (only 1 over 3.9)

T-handicaps are an average of the lowest 6 out of the last 12 tournament scores (1st/Last Wednesdays, and yellow-card events) from 2009-present. Only 9 players have a T-handicap more than 1.0 below their USGA based on fewer than 12 events to draw from.

To address the fact that T-handicaps are harder to influence and less representative of a player's current trend, we discussed allowing rounds played with a lower T-handicap to be posted as Tournament scores. This is not allowed by the USGA. However, using our current system of playing with the lesser of one's 2 handicaps, 81.2% (160/197) of our members play on Wednesdays within 1.0 stroke of their USGA, 91.9% (181/197) play within 2 strokes, and 98.0% (193/197) play within 3 strokes.

Since there is so little difference for the vast majority of members, and since the formats often blur the effects of an individual player's handicap, we decided we could return to using only the USGA (EZLinks) handicaps on Wednesdays with no material affect on the competitions. Thus, we have dispensed with T-handicaps on Wednesdays. I hope that comes as good news.

The flip side is that the prevailing accuracy of the T-handicaps supports their use in tournaments, and they will be properly influenced by the scores posted. There continues to be an appeal process for players who feel unfairly burdened by their lower T-handicap in these events, and the relatively few players facing more than a 2 stroke deduction (16/197 - 8.1%) makes it feasible to address appeals on an individual basis (the USGA recommends a 3.0 stroke maximum tolerance).

In any system, there are bound to be individual cases that are less well-served than the majority. My personal opinion is that the Tournament Handicap system is working for HPMC. The failsafe is the appeal process which we encourage members to pursue. For example, one golfer with a T-handicap 3.3 strokes below his USGA has been granted a compromise based on illness that affected his recent trend. One could also make the case that a 2.0 stroke differential impacts a single-digit player more than it affects a high handicapper, so there are grey areas that can only be addressed on an individul basis.

This is not intended as the final word on the subject, just a baseline to frame further discussion. Let's continue the discussion in the spirit of common support of what we are trying to accomplish. There are certainly ways to tweak the system without abandoning it. For example, is using the lowest 6 of the last 12 tournament scores the right formula? I hope we can count on your support of HPMC with the knowledge that the Board will continue to listen and respond to member concerns.

Best Regards,
Scott Weaver - President, Harbour Pointe Men's Club

After reading this message from the Prez,I hope it helps everybody understand Tournament Handicap verses Course Handicap, we really are trying to play on a level field. Results and Much More

Happy Easter everyone, hope your Easter egg hunts went well and Easter dinner was a tasty success.I've got quite a lot to post today, so hope you'll take time to read it all. Some of it will be pretty entertaining. Walley sent me this next text that I'm posting and I'm sure while you're reading it you'll think of guys you've played with, enjoy Time to Reconnect With Joys Missed and Tee Shots Lost By BILL PENNINGTON
Sam Manchester/The New York Times
There is no documented truth to the theory that months of pitiless snowstorms, weeks of
subzero wind chills and an early April dose of sleet that froze the dog’s feet to the sidewalk now
guarantee that the 2011 golf season will be the best and most satisfying ever.
But I am accepting it as undeniable reality.
Virtually wherever you lived in the United States this past winter, the weather was frequently
not amenable to golf. Here in the Northern climates, as I stood beside my car pondering what
grip to use on the ice scraper — overlapping, interlocking, baseball, stranglehold — I wondered
if the greens at my home course missed me under all that drifting snow as much as I missed
them. I even missed the bunkers and water hazards.
But missing them gave me something to look forward to in the spring. So for this the first week
of a new season of On Par, 10 things I missed most.1. The first tee shot of the spring, framed against the sky.
2. Not being able to find that drive after it plugs into the soggy
turf.3. Feeling proud of myself for being miserly enough to have used an old ball, knowing how soft the ground is in mid-April.4. The guys I regularly see at my golf course, even those with strange habits. Doesn’t every club have a guy who makes odd sounds on the tee — rattling his bag in search of gum, making a
peculiar clacking of his teeth or playing with the Velcro on his glove? You get so used to it, and you miss him when he’s not there. Then there’s the guy who drives past his tee shot in the rough on nearly every par 4. When the ball is found 50 yards behind him, he always says, “Oh, back there?”
There’s the guy who walks onto the tee of the first par 3 in every round, and though he has played the course for 18 consecutive years, he asks, “What’s the yardage here again?”But my favorite is the guy who always has a joke on the first tee. It is usually not even funny, but we all laugh anyway because we appreciate the effort to distract us from our first-tee jitters.5. The warmth of the golf experience. Not in temperature; I was thinking more of the day’smission and the companionship it spawns. Golf is so routinely insane and patently irresolvable that the overriding job becomes keeping everyone in the group moving forward. This must be
done even though it means negotiating your way over hill and dale, through hazards, penalties,
obstructions and out of bounds. It is not easy, and that’s why you have golf partners. The group forges a bond, however lasting or temporary. The mission is complete when everyone leaves the last hole with a smile. How often in our disjointed, preoccupied lives do four people commit to sticking together for
one task for several hours? That’s what I missed.6. Being alone on the golf course. I know I just said I missed the companionship, but golf is endlessly varied, and one of its treats is the ability, often early in the morning or late in the evening, to set your pace of play as if it were linked to the rhythm of your own heart.
Want to play three balls on each hole? Want to dash around and play 12 holes in 90 minutes? Want to wander in the woods looking for lost balls? Go ahead. Play alone, and you’re always at play.
Nongolfers who think golf is stressful have no idea how often we never keep score. Playing golf
alone is like a reset button for life.7. The unexpected. A recent Swedish study reported that golfers live on average five years longer than nongolfers. Why? Golfers are hard to surprise. Golfers know how to adjust. Golfers are less likely to be struck by cabs on city streets, because we take a step back whenever
anyone is driving.Golf is good preparation for life’s vagaries — even when no one yells “Fore!”
8. The sportsmanship and, sometimes, even the lack of it. When a partner calls a penalty on himself, or when you add a stroke to your score because of that extra whiff in the woods that no one else saw, there is a strange but identifiable honor. You may be laughing at yourself, you may be angry or embarrassed, but you know you did the right thing. And on those rare occasions when I see someone cheating at golf, it makes me realize the pressure some people feel they are under to perform. How awful must that feel? No game,
score, bet or trophy is worth it. That’s another reset button.9. The sounds. A yelp from a far-off green when a long putt falls. A scream from the same distance when a putt lips out. The soft plunk heard from the fairway when an approach shot settles near the hole. The hard crack heard from the tee when a wayward drive lands on a cart path (best enjoyed when it adds 50 yards of distance). That weird thump of a flubbed shot, all
sod and no ball. The clank and jiggling metal sound of the flag being dropped in the fringe, a prelude to the best sound of all, that turkey gobble of ball clattering in the hole.I even missed the sounds on the driving range: the rat-a-tat-tat of multiple hits down the line, the grunting, the pleading, the muttering and disgust mixed with the occasional perfect contact, followed by a sweet silence. It’s all good.
10. The unfairness. This may sound senseless, but sometimes in golf, it is the truly ridiculous outcome — ball hits sprinkler head in fairway and bounces into nearby forest — that grounds you in a way that other sports cannot. It’s easy to be frustrated and unnerved, but if you stay composed and make par anyway, you walk to the next tee a master of the golfing universe. You faced unfair and beat it. Besides, golf doles out small doses of unfair. It’s character-building.You want truly unfair? Unfair is having your car buried by the snowplow just after you cleaned all the snow off. That’s unfair. And there is absolutely nothing good that comes of it. Because even when you clean it off again, as you sleep, the snowplow might bury it anew.
Man, I’m glad it is golf season again
Next I'd like to give everybody who played in last weeks' players championship a big pat on the back for enduring some of mother natures' toughest conditions along with the tough conditions of the course. I'd like to thank the maintenance staff for doing what they could, considering the weather conditions lately. I'll be sending the results to the Herald this week, so they'll be in the golf section Thursday. I'll also post them in this blog posting.
John Crots ask me to remind all club members that the Member-Member Tournament is June11 & 12 and NOT June 25 & 26 as originally schedule. This years format is match play and it always fills up, so get a partner and sign up soon as possible.Remind your golf buddies if they don't read blog. I'm going to put the past results in my next posting of the day because this one has gotten alittle long.

Events for the week of April 11

Just a couple things for this week guys. First on the list, is the scheduled rules seminar that Chuck West will be giving on Tuesday, April 12th. It'll start at 7 PM and go for an hour or so, depending on rules questions. This is a great time for this seminar because of the Players Championship this weekend, April 16th and 17th. This meeting should solve any questions about local course rules and everyday rules that seem always to come in to play.So grab a friend and come learn something new. Second as mention, the Players Championship is this weekend, with two divisions, top fifty money winners from last year and non top money winners. It'll be gross and net for both Divisions. Tee times for Sat. and shotgun for Sunday. Third, the Harbour Pointe Cup match is underway. Jon will be sending out info for this format this week, there's a bracket on the bulletin board. Lastly and of GREAT IMPORTANCE, Keith Coleman last Wed nite was officially given the title of GM of  Harbour Pointe Golf Club. Congrats KC.

Wed nite results

Just a couple things before I post the last couple of Wed. Nite results. Our first major of the year  will be on the 16th & 17th of April, be sure and get signed up for this tournament. It'll be Tee times on Sat. and a shot gun on Sunday. There'll be two division ,top fifty money winner from last year and non top fifity division, gross and net winners for each division. Again we'll be using tournament handicaps for this tournament, please check with the staff behind the counter when you check in,what your index is. Those sixty and older playing from the white tees, will be playing with one less stroke. Please guys stop your complaining about your tournament handicap. These handicaps are base on tournaments you have played only at Harbour Pointe, so some of you will have higher handicaps and others will have lower handicaps. If your course handicap is lower than your tournament handicap then you'll play with the lower of two. If you haven't figured it out yet this is the only way we can keep control of SANDBAGGERS. So make every round at Harbour Pointe a good round and you're two handicaps will be closer and you'll feel better about your rounds. If you,re not playing many tournaments, then it'll take some time for your tournament handicap to show your true colors, depending on your play, so play more tournaments!!!!!!

President's Message

Hey Guys what a great Wednesday to kick off this years Wed. Nite  Mens' Club play. Thanks to all of you  who came out to play and enjoy the fun and camaraderie of the day. As soon as John Crots sends me the results of the day I'll get them posted here, and in the Herald sports page. Now lets make this a habit and have good showing every Wed. nite. The weather this coming Wed. is suppose to be about the same.
Wed., our  Pres. past out new and update info. from the board, but I think a lot of you probably lost that paper, so I'm going to put them in this posting.First, most if not all individual and 2 man weekend tournaments will be flighted to further enhance competitive balance. On weekend and Wednesday competitions, golfers will be ask to direct their competition fee portion to either gross or net competition. If you want to play in both, then you'll be ask to pay another $5, but you will only be allowed to cash in one division - net or gross-which ever pays more.On all Wed. and weekend  tournaments we will be using the lower of your two handicaps ( Tournament or Ezlink/WSGA).Guests may cash in one only Wed. nite event  with out being a paid member. You must be a paid member for future consideration. The requirements to play in our 4 majors is based on play before each major. One Wed. or weekend tournament before first major, 2 before the second major, three before third and four for the fourth major. We will continue to offer Super Senior option this year to golfers aged 60 and over to compete from the white Tees, minus 1 stoke from your white tee handicap. Finally , new for 2011, your Board has implemented a maximum 12- stroke handicap differential between partners for the Member-Member and the Holiday Classic. Partners can have a wider differential but will only be allowed to use just 12 of those strokes.

Tournament results

Greetings guys, before I post the results of Sundays' play, I want to remind everyone that we're posting scores again as of March 1. So please keep up with your scores if they're not tournament numbers. The club will be posting tournaments again. We'll be playing the lowest of the two handicaps for tournaments. Next, if you don't already know, the greens were punched and sanded on Monday. This is the same time as last year, so in a couple of weeks the greens will be coming up to the standards we've all learned to enjoy at Harbour Pointe. Also this Friday is the reschedule of the Par Three tournament, so get aboard and have some fun.

Rules File

OK guys, starting this week and continuing as often as Chuck West sends me new rules, I'll be posting golf rules in this blog for you to read and learn. Each and every new rule will be presented in this post, even after it goes into archive.Anytime you want to review a rule, it'll be in this posting. If you don't see it right away then look in the monthly archived titles and click on Rules file.

Subject: Rules deal for the Blog
As we get ready for the 2011 season there are always some "interesting" discussions that pop up in the bar about situations on the course and what the proper ruling procedure is on that. As I get ready to go teach a workshop in Orange County I finally have gotten around to doing this for a situation that comes up continually on hole #11. Down the left side of that hole is out of bounds which is identified and marked by the use of the white poles. Also right along that boundary line are houses where some homeowners have chosen to place a fence to keep people off of their lawns. The fence is situated out of bounds but it does not mark the boundary of the golf course. The white stakes do that.
The error being made is that players are claiming interference from the fence under Rule 24-2 claiming the fence to be an immovable obstruction. But under the definition of "Obstruction" it reads "An Obstruction is anything artificial, including the artificial surfaces and sides of roads and paths and manufactured ice, EXCEPT:
a) Objects defining out of bounds, such as walls, fences, stakes, and railings;
b) Any part of an immovable artificial object that is out of bounds (which is the case here) and,
c) Any construction declared by the Committee to be an integral part of the course.
Clearly item B states that these fences to the left of #11 which are not defining out of bounds (again the stakes do that) are not considered obstructions under Rule 24. In addition to that Decision 24-2b/21 addresses our exact situation.
Q: An immovable artificial object situated out of bounds interferes with a player's swing. May the player obtain relief as provided in Rule 24-2b?
A: No. Immovable artificial objects off the course are not obstructions (see Definition of "Obstructions"); therefore, the Rules provide no relief without penalty
Hopefully as we roll into our tournament and event season, we can all be on the same page on this issue and play it CORRECTLY from here forward. As always, I welcome any rules questions or ideas for the blog. There are always some good ones that make you think "really?" and they are fun to discuss and we will try and put issues that are pertinent to our golf course on the blog periodically. Look forward to seeing all of you out here soon.

Greetings guys, hope all is going well for everyone. By now a lot of you have heard about the news that Mark Rashell has accepted the position of Director of Golf at Newcastle Golf Club this past week. This is an exciting  new challenge for him in his golf career. I know I speak for everyone at the course, that we wish him good luck and great success in the coming years. On that note, the 25th of Feb. is the Par 3 tournament and Karaoke afterward. This will also be a going away party for Mark, for those of you who like to send Mark off with a big bang !!!!!!So lets get as many golfers as possible to sign up for the tournament and have a great party afterwards. Now despite what you've read or have heard, no positions have been filled at Harbour Pointe, Keith Coleman is the interim Director of Golf and/or GM until Corporate procedures have been completed. Mark will be sending me his message of thanks to you all in the coming days and I'll get it posted on the blog, so let everyone you know, what has been posted here today and what will be posted soon.
Now on a personal note as Mark's dad ,I would like to thank all of you golfers, who have played golf over the years,, for making Mark's stay at the Pointe a memorable and wonderful success.
